SOUNDS NATURAL
Sounds Natural Series — A Journey into Healing Art, Sound and Nature
The Sounds Natural Series offers a transformative experience that reconnects you with the healing power of sound and nature. Hosted at various natural environments—urban, rural, parks, and forests—this series combines art, food, music, and engaging workshops to create a unique and immersive retreat for all participants. Each event in the series explores the ways sound can be a tool for relaxation, healing, and self-discovery.
Throughout the day, you’ll engage in creative art activities, enjoy delicious food, and experience live music designed to deepen your connection to the natural world. Our workshops are centered around mindfulness practices, meditation, and sound therapy, guiding you to tune in to your surroundings in new and meaningful ways.
One of the highlights of the Sounds Natural Series is our signature Sound Walks—guided journeys through diverse environments where you’ll focus on listening deeply to the sounds of nature. These walks, paired with active listening sessions, will help you engage with the present moment and discover the profound healing properties of the sounds around you.
Join us for a day of relaxation, creativity, and connection with nature, and experience the transformative power of sound in a way that will soothe your mind, body, and spirit.

The Story Behind Sounds Natural
Sounds Natural was born from the shared vision of Brother El (Lional Freeman) and Aquil “AQ” Charlton—two longtime collaborators, educators, and artists who believe deeply in the power of sound and nature to heal, inspire, and connect. Both have spent years creating spaces where community, creativity, and wellness intersect, and they saw a growing need for moments of stillness, reflection, and intentional listening—especially in a fast-paced, overstimulated world.
Drawing on their experiences in music production, sound healing, and community engagement, they created Sounds Natural as a way to bring people into direct connection with their environments through immersive sound walks, active listening, and creative expression. By moving the series through urban, rural, park, and forest settings, they invite participants to rediscover the beauty in their surroundings and the quiet power within themselves.
For Brother El and AQ, Sounds Natural isn’t just an event—it’s a practice, a movement, and a reminder that sometimes, the most profound transformation happens when we simply stop, listen, and let nature speak

Community, Connection, and Nature at Camp Shabbona Woods
Captured in this moment are the beautiful faces of our Sounds Natural attendees during our activation at Camp Shabbona Woods. Surrounded by towering trees and the calming rhythm of the forest, participants gathered to explore the healing power of sound through workshops, music, and intentional listening.

Black Boy Joy Blooming
This powerful moment captures pure Black Boy Joy as a young artist begins to tap into his creativity with paint at the Camp Shabana Woods. With curiosity and a paintbrush between his fingertips, he explores self-expression freely and fearlessly—reminding us all of the beauty that emerges when Black youth are given space to create, imagine, and simply be. This is what freedom looks like.

Setting the Stage at Bronzewood Gathering Space
Before the attendees arrive, the Bronzewood Gathering Space is calm and beautifully prepared—tables thoughtfully arranged with art supplies, instruments, and wellness materials; speakers gently humming with ambient sounds; and nature wrapping around the space like a gentle welcome. Every detail is intentional, from the placement of the paintbrushes to the open seating that invites conversation, creativity, and connection. This peaceful moment captures the essence of Sounds Natural—a sacred setup awaiting the energy and spirit of the community.

Yes, We Really Be Camping
This image says it all—yes, we really be camping! Tents pitched, gear set, and hearts open to the elements, this moment captures our community showing up fully and unapologetically to explore, reflect, and reconnect with the land. More than just an outdoor hangout, this was a serious commitment to being present in nature, to slowing down, and to becoming one with our environments. It’s a celebration of Black and Brown bodies in natural spaces, reclaiming our right to rest, explore, and thrive under the open sky.

Opening Portals Through Sound
In this powerful moment, a featured artist leads a sound healing session using crystal singing bowls, creating waves of resonance that ripple through the space and into the hearts of those present. With each tone, participants are invited to slow down, listen inward, and reconnect with their natural being. This session wasn’t just about sound—it was about awakening the sensory tools we all carry within, unlocking emotional landscapes, and guiding people into deeper self-exploration through vibration, breath, and stillness. The atmosphere was sacred, the energy transformative, and the sound—pure medicine.
